Hussein Chalayan

Autumn/Winter 2007

Designer, film-maker, artist and lecturer, fashion’s best known master conceptualist Hussein Chalayan’s work has no boundaries—across technology, fashion, design and art, Chalayan is singular and seen as the industry’s rebel for simply being radically himself.

Chalayan’s capsule collection for Atelier Swarovski features both his own designs and a selection by Austrian jeweler Florian Ladstaetter, with pieces which embody two very different aesthetics: one clean and futuristic, the other rounded and natural. The two Hussein Chalayan cuffs are rendered in sleek silver tone metal, sparingly set with iridescent crystals that play against the minimalist geometric shapes. In contrast, the necklaces created by Ladstaetter take natural, tribal jewelry for their inspiration, with matte and shining crystal pearls in cream and shapes that lend a natural, unstructured feel.

Hussein Chalayan was born in Cyprus and studied at Central Saint Martins, graduating in 1993 and setting up his own label the following year. Chalayan won British Designer of the year for two consecutive years in 1999 and 2000 and was awarded an MBE in 2006. He has also turned his hand to film, making and representing Turkey in the 2005 Venice Biennale with his film Absent Presence.
